Legendary Tones Mr Scary Mod Deep Gain George Lynch Tube Gain Module Reverse Wire

Created in collaboration with George Lynch, the Mr. Scary Mod is a custom-modified version of the Hot Mod V2. Want to supercharge your classic Marshall amp with more gain without applying a permanent modification? Then read more below and welcome to the Mr. Scary Mod!

George tried the original Hot Mod V2 (HMV2) in his Marshall and enjoyed it, so we decided to collaborate and do a custom-voiced version specifically for him. So instead of the HMV2s two-position Hot Switch for two pre-set gain stages, weve added a gain knob that goes from unity gain all the way to scorching hot on the Mr. Scary Mod. And just like the original HMV2, all the clarity and low-noise characteristics have been retained. We also added a Deep switch to help provide a bass boost when desired or when using a guitar that might otherwise be a little thin. With the Deep switch off, low end is tightened and it serves as a slight bass cut for clarity.

Originally released as the Lynch Mod in February 2021, the updated Mr. Scary Mod features the same circuit as the Lynch Mod but is now equipped with a tube mix combo of 12AT7/12AX7 per Georges preference as well as a facelift in a newly redesigned electro-galvanized steel enclosure. As with the Lynch Mod, each run will be limited and this first run in Pumpkin Orange with Black hardware is limited to just 150 pieces worldwide.

The Mr. Scary Mod adds an adjustable 100% pure tube gain stage on top of the cathode follower V2 position, keeping note definition and articulation while further increasing sustain. Each Mr. Scary mod is meticulously built and wired by hand in the USA, one at a time, and tuned using high-grade components. Equipped with a single ECC81 (12AT7) in the first position and ECC83 (12AX7) in the second, the Mr. Scary Mod can clean up beautifully when rolling down your guitars volume, and still adds scorching gain when you roll it back up. This is a gain stage thats been tuned and approved by the ears of the maestro George Lynch himself and is incredibly dynamic and touch-responsive.

The Mr. Scary Mod excels with dynamics and is incredibly touch-responsive, allowing me to shift from playing clear, lightly compressed cleans to full-out aggressive sustain and distortion and control it all simply by varying my guitars volume control and picking, said George Lynch. In many ways, its an old-school approach, but its also so much more natural and expressive in addition to being musically fulfilling when you can play both the guitar and amp dynamically together this way.

NOTES ON OTHER AMPS

CLONES:The Hot Mod V2 has been found to work well in a variety of Marshall 1959/1987/2203/2204 clone and similar circuits including: Ceriatone, Germino, Mojotone, Wangs, and Bugera (Bugera requires a reverse wired HMV2E model and is compatible with pre-Infinium 1960 model only. Bugera Infinium 1960 will NOT work properly). If your clone amp is based on a 2203/2204 design and has any squealing/oscillation noise when using it with the HMV2/Lynch Mod, it is likely because the amp doesnt use shielded wire on pin 7 of V1 like Marshall amps use on their 2203/2204 designs from 1979+. This would be a good update to perform on the clone amp, regardless of the use of the HMV2/Lynch Mod or not as Pin 7 of V1 tends to be sensitive.

FRIEDMAN AMPS:Runt 50 is compatible with the reverse-wire version of the Hot Mod V2 Evo and Lynch Mods (use in V3 position of Runt 50). The Small Box and BE-100 are also compatible but require use of standard wired HMV2E or Lynch Mod.

NOTE: Friedman amps are NOT compatible with earlier pre-EVO Hot Mod V2 units.

NOTE 2: While the Runt 20, JJ Jr. and Pink Taco 20 models are sonically compatible with the HMV2E and Lynch Mod, the head enclosures are too shallow and dont have enough depth to fit the HMV2E chassis.

OTHER AMPS:The Hot Mod V2 is designed to work with amps which use a cathode follower design into the tone stack. It adds a gain stage essentially on top of the cathode follower. As a result, the HMV2 will function in other classic amps like Fender Pro, Super, Twin, etc. as well as others like Vox AC30 or certain Traynor amps, etc. However, the circuit of the HMV2 has been tuned and optimized for Marshall circuits, so we generally recommend they be used for the models in the list above only. If we were to make a design for a Fender for example, it would be tuned differently just like it would also be tuned differently for a Vox.

Popular amps that the HMV2/Lynch Mod DO NOT WORK with include: Marshall Silver Jubilee series, Marshall Origin series, Marshall DSL/TSL series, Mesa Boogie amps, and Hiwatt.

NEW and updated for 2021! Introducing the LegendaryTones HOT MOD V2 EVO, a plug-in dual tube module specifically engineered to dramatically increase gain in Marshall amps. The HOT MOD V2 EVO requires NO chassis cutting, drilled holes, or wiring modifications to your amp it simply and easily installs in place of the middle V2 tube position. The circuit within harnesses the power of an additional gain stage now running an additional tube.

Want your classic Marshall to sing with increased sustain and pure vacuum tube tone? Your tube high-gain solution is here. No solid state tricks or clipping diodes. 100% pure tube gain. The HOT MOD V2 EVO circuit was carefully designed to give you gradual increases of gain when using the amps preamp control. From adding a touch of sweet sustain, to full on metal, your Marshall will now have greater flexibility and deliver a wider range of tones.

With the HOT MOD V2 EVO (HMV2E), because the increased gain is created inside the amp rather than through an external pedal booster running in front of the input, the noise level of the HMV2E is dramatically reduced even at higher gain settings compared to when using an overdrive or EQ pedal used as a clean boost. Additionally, because of the HMV2E design focus was articulation with sustain, your signal can still clean up well by rolling back your guitars volume control. And if for some reason you still wanted more gain from an external pedal to shape or increase the signal gain further, you can still do it. You likely wont need to, but go ahead and hit the front end of your amp with a hotter signal and the HMV2E will take it just fine!

The Marshall JMP and JCM 800 series amps from the 1970s and 1980s are legendary. And back in the day, they were getting hot rodded in numerous ways and indeed were a fantastic platform to work from. The quality of the transformers and components used in those classic amps was unparalleled. Sad to say that its true that they dont make them like they used to. Now you can get many of the same high-gain Marshall tones with the simple and easy-to-use HMV2E. With the quality build and components (transformers, capacitors) found in those original early Marshall JMP and JCM 800 series amps and pure tube signal and tone thats straight-forward and organic, the HMV2E is a great way to modernize and get the most out of your amp.

The onboard Bass boost/cut switch is a customer request for those players who wanted to have a tighter low end. In the down position, the note articulation stays tight. When in the up position, a nice range of low-end resonance.

The 2-stage Gain switch gives high-gain boosts in both positions. In the down position it has more note clarity and attack, in the up position, even more sustain and compression. The down position is based on the tuning of the original Hot Mod V2.
